The pace. Eight days and seven nights, including arrival, departure, one rail day and two road stages. The longest drive is Jiayuguan to Dunhuang. Xining is an arrival gateway, not a Qinghai sightseeing circuit.

Day 1 · Xining
Meet your arrival contact and rest in Xining before tomorrow’s train. No sightseeing appointment depends on your flight arriving early.
Day plan
Meet your receiving contact at Xining Caojiabao Airport and transfer to the hotel. A railway arrival can be assessed instead. The route includes this first night so it does not rely on a same-day flight-to-train connection.
Check in and take the evening at your own pace. The hotel follows normal check-in hours. Qinghai Lake, mountain excursions and a guided night visit are not part of this arrival plan.
Day 2 · Zhangye
Travel on the confirmed public train to Zhangye West, with private transfers and a clear meeting plan at each end.
Day plan
After breakfast, transfer to the station with time for identity checks, security and boarding. Carry the original document used for the ticket and keep essential items with you.
Take the scheduled train in the second-class seats specified in your quote. The final itinerary confirms the actual service, carriage, seats and luggage arrangements; no specific timetable is promised by this outline.
Follow the agreed exit instructions and meet your local receiving contact for the hotel transfer. Your travel notes provide a contact method and a plan for a delayed train.
Have lunch at your own expense and check in. Keep the afternoon free after the rail journey; the temple and Danxia visits have a full day tomorrow.
Day 3 · Zhangye
Begin with the temple’s reclining Buddha, pause in town, then visit the colourful hills at a time suited to the season.
Day plan
Visit the temple with your guide and look at how the long reclining figure occupies the hall. Discuss the Western Xia background and the building around it, rather than treating the stop as a quick photograph. Follow the hall’s current photography rules.
Return for lunch at your own expense and time at the hotel. This pause separates the indoor cultural visit from the exposed landscape later in the day.
Travel to the Colorful Danxia scenic area and use the designated viewing circuit. Compare the bands and angles of the hills from selected platforms, taking the park transport between stops. Walking and steps can be shortened to suit your party.
Return to the same hotel for an independent dinner. The final departure and return times follow the season’s opening hours and the agreed meal plan.
Day 4 · Jiayuguan
Drive to Jiayuguan, take a meal break and explore the fortress before staying overnight in the city.
Day plan
Check out after breakfast and drive west with a comfort stop. This is a travel morning, with the road allowance checked against your hotels and current conditions.
Pause in Jiayuguan for lunch at your own expense. Your guide helps you choose a suitable place before continuing to the fortress.
Explore the agreed fortress circuit, looking at the gates, walls and open country around the stronghold. Your guide distinguishes the Ming frontier defences from the earlier centuries of Silk Road exchange.
Transfer to the selected hotel and leave the evening free. The overnight breaks the journey before tomorrow’s longer drive.
Day 5 · Dunhuang
Set aside the day for the longer westward transfer, with breaks and lunch on the way. Arrive without an attraction deadline.
Day plan
Check out after breakfast and travel towards Dunhuang. Keep water, snacks and an extra layer in the vehicle cabin. The reference plan allows roughly five hours of road travel, with lunch additional; actual conditions can extend it.
Break the journey at an agreed town or rest stop. Lunch is paid separately. Food choices and facilities vary, so dietary needs are checked before departure.
Resume the journey with comfort stops as needed. No cave visit, Yadan excursion or distant sunset stop is attached to this transfer.
Check into the same hotel used for the remaining nights. Rest and choose an independent dinner; the main sightseeing begins tomorrow.
Day 6 · Dunhuang
Build the day around the confirmed Mogao reservation, then return to Dunhuang for lunch, questions and rest.
Day plan
Meet your guide and travel to the designated visitor starting point. Pickup allows for the reserved slot, checks and any language arrangements. Leave larger luggage at the hotel.
Follow the confirmed programme, taking time to look at figures, narrative scenes and the way the decoration fills each cave. Your local guide provides context around the site’s own visitor arrangements.
Return to town for lunch at your own expense. Ask your guide about what you noticed before returning to the hotel.
The planned service ends after the hotel return. Rest or explore independently. This day and the following dune day may swap only when admissions and conditions allow.
Day 7 · Dunhuang
Visit Crescent Lake in a suitable outdoor window, rest during the afternoon and meet your guide again for a short evening walk.
Day plan
Travel to the scenic area and follow the visitor paths towards the lake and pavilion. Look across the dune slopes, with time to sit and take photographs. Climbing loose sand is optional, not a requirement of the route.
Return to the hotel area for lunch at your own expense and an independent afternoon. The morning vehicle service ends here; it does not remain on standby during the break.
Meet your guide for an approximately one-hour neighbourhood walk near the central hotel. Follow streets and food shops that are open, with conversation shaped by your interests. Dinner, shopping and tastings are separate.
Day 8 · Dunhuang
Check out and take the private transfer for your confirmed departure. No core attraction is left for the last day.
Day plan
Have breakfast if the departure allows, then check out at the agreed time. Late checkout or an extra night requires a separate arrangement.
Meet the driver for the journey to Dunhuang Airport, allowing the airline’s required check-in time. A railway departure can be assessed instead; Liuyuan is a different, more distant station and is not included by default.
