Updated October 5, 2026. For US passport holders applying in the United States for a tourist visa to mainland China. Fees for 2027 have not yet been confirmed.
You do not need an agency to apply for a China tourist visa. You can fill out the form online, respond to review requests, then arrange to drop off and pick up your passport at the Chinese embassy or consulate that serves your home address.
If you live far from a visa office, those two trips may take more planning than the paperwork. Start by checking which office you need, what it accepts and how you will get your passport there and back.
Do you need a tourist visa?
For a typical US–China–US vacation, US passport holders generally need an L visa, China's tourist visa. Check any Chinese visa you already hold before applying again. If you will continue to a different country or region, you may qualify for visa-free transit instead.
Your trip or circumstances | What to check |
|---|---|
US → mainland China → US | Normally requires an L visa. This round trip does not qualify for 240-hour visa-free transit. |
US → mainland China → Japan, for example | US citizens are eligible by nationality for 240-hour transit. Your route, confirmed onward ticket, entry port and travel area must also meet the rules. |
A valid Chinese visa in an old passport | You may be able to use both passports if the required personal details and travel purpose remain compatible. Check the official conditions before reapplying. |
Travel mainly for family visits, work, study or business | Check the relevant visa category. The tourist checklist does not replace the requirements for Q, S, M, Z or X visas. |
The United States is not covered by China's general unilateral 30-day visa-free policy as of this update. The 240-hour transit policy has separate conditions. Read the National Immigration Administration's transit rules and our China visa guide before choosing a transit itinerary.
US ordinary-passport holders are also eligible for Hainan's separate 30-day visa-free policy, subject to its conditions. Travel is restricted to Hainan; it does not authorize a trip elsewhere in mainland China. Check the official regional visa-free rules if your entire vacation is on the island.
Step 1: Find your visa office
Apply through the Chinese embassy or consulate responsible for your US residence. Select that office in the online system and use an address document from the same district. The closest office may serve a different district.
Visa office | Consular district |
|---|---|
DC, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Delaware, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Texas and Puerto Rico. | |
New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Maine, Vermont and Rhode Island. | |
Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Wisconsin, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota. | |
Northern California, Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming. | |
Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, Hawaii and the Pacific Islands. |
California residents should confirm their district. Check the San Francisco district list and Los Angeles jurisdiction notice to see whether your home address falls in Northern or Southern California. Contact the consulate if the boundary is unclear. Before traveling, confirm the visa office's address, weekday hours and holiday closures. The visa counter may be in a different building from the embassy or consulate.
Depending on the office, a driver's license, state ID, utility bill or bank statement can serve as proof of residence. The address should match your application. A parent's address document may be accepted for a child who does not have one.
Step 2: Gather your documents
Make clear digital copies and keep the originals together. Use this checklist to get started, then follow the portal's requests and your visa office's instructions.
Document | For the online application | For the visa office |
|---|---|---|
Passport | Scan the personal details page and any blank pages requested. Have more than six months of validity remaining and at least two blank visa pages. | The original passport used in the application. |
Visa photo | A compliant digital photo taken within the past six months. | Follow the office's instructions. Los Angeles does not require a printed photo if the upload succeeds. |
Proof of US residence | An accepted document with an address in the office's district. | Bring it if the office or reviewer requests it. |
Previous Chinese visa or residence permit | Upload the document and relevant passport pages, if applicable. | Bring an old passport containing a still-valid visa if required by the local checklist. |
Proof of a name change | A marriage certificate, court order or other official record, if needed. | Any original requested. |
Documents for former Chinese citizens | For a first application after naturalization, the last Chinese passport and proof of naturalization, as required locally. | The original Chinese passport, or the office's stated alternative if it is unavailable. |
Documents for a child's first application | A birth certificate and any required parent or nationality documents. Los Angeles lists a birth certificate for first-time applicants under 16. | Any originals requested for the child's circumstances. |
Application information page | Wait until the status is “Passport to be submitted.” | A printout showing the barcode and that status, plus any requested originals. |
The embassy and several consulates require two blank visa pages; Los Angeles lists one. Having two avoids depending on the less demanding rule. If you are short on pages or passport validity, resolve that before filling out the form.
Flights, hotels and invitation letters
Since January 1, 2024, routine tourist applicants in the United States have generally not needed to submit flight reservations, hotel bookings, an itinerary or an invitation letter. You still need to provide truthful travel details, and the officer may ask for more information. You do not need to buy a nonrefundable ticket just to provide routine L-visa booking evidence.
Use the Chinese visa photo format
The Chinese visa photo specification calls for a 33 × 48 mm photo with a plain white background, a clear front-facing view and a neutral expression. A US 2 × 2-inch passport photo is a different size. Ask the photographer for a Chinese visa photo.
Follow the portal's file size, format and cropping instructions, and keep the original image for any adjustments. If repeated photo checks fail, the embassy's online guidance allows you to continue the form and bring a compliant printed photo when you submit your passport. Follow any instructions from your reviewing office. See the official photo specification.
Step 3: Apply online
Use China's official visa application portal. The system introduced at US offices in September 2025 requires an online preliminary review before you submit your passport.
Create an account with your email address. One account can handle several people, but each traveler needs a separate application.
Select your embassy or consulate and the L visa category. A computer makes it easier to check the form and manage your files.
Fill out the form. Have your passport, previous visa details and proof of address handy. Check names, dates, passport numbers, employment history and travel purpose. You must still enter planned arrival and departure dates and cities, even though routine booking evidence is waived.
Upload the requested documents. The list depends on your circumstances; some applicants need more than a passport scan, photo and address document.
Review and submit. Check your account regularly afterward and respond in the portal to requests for corrections or more documents.
The embassy's online guidance limits the intended arrival date to the next 90 days. If your trip is farther away, gather your documents now and submit once your arrival falls within that window. The guidance asks for image files rather than PDFs; check the accepted format for each upload field.
Application status | What to do |
|---|---|
Supplementary materials to be provided | Read the request and upload the additional documents. |
Rejected and to be modified | Make the corrections described in the review message. This status is not a final visa refusal. |
Passport to be submitted | Print the barcode/status page and arrange to deliver your passport. |
Passport to be collected | Check the pickup-slip date, collection instructions and payment method before traveling. |
If you find an error after submitting, read the embassy FAQ before starting another application. It describes cancellation and resubmission, with a limit of two cancellations within 90 days. If the reviewer asks for a correction, follow that message.
Step 4: Drop off your passport
Wait until the portal says “Passport to be submitted.” You can then walk in during your visa office's opening hours. Bring your original passport, the printed application information page with the barcode and status, and any other originals requested. Follow the signature instructions in the application or local guidance. Passing online review is not final visa approval.
You can usually deliver the documents yourself or have a trusted representative or agency do it. US guidance does not require you to attend for fingerprint collection, though an officer may ask you to come in for an interview.
Arrange delivery promptly. Los Angeles says applications are automatically canceled if the required physical materials are not submitted within 30 days of reaching this status. Check your office's notice for its deadline.
You will receive a pickup slip when the office accepts your passport. Keep the original and decide who will collect it. A photo is useful for your records, but should not be treated as a substitute for the original slip.
Step 5: Allow for fees and processing time
Your application has two waiting periods: online preliminary review and processing after passport drop-off. The advertised processing time covers the second stage, so a four-day service does not mean four days from submitting the online form.
Fee or service | What US applicants can expect |
|---|---|
Regular visa fee | USD 140 under the reduced-fee arrangement through December 31, 2026. |
Express fee | An additional USD 25 where express service is accepted. Availability depends on the office and application. |
Regular passport processing | Usually about four business days after drop-off. Some applications take longer. |
Express passport processing | The embassy lists three business days; Los Angeles lists two to three. Online review still comes first. |
Other costs | Allow for photos, printing, travel, parking, lodging or a representative's delivery charges. |
Applications handled in 2027 | Check the fee schedule again. The official sources for this guide do not confirm a 2027 fee. |
The embassy's reduced-fee notice gives the rate and December 31, 2026 end date.
Payment options vary. The embassy accepts Visa or Mastercard credit cards, money orders and cashier's checks. Los Angeles accepts Visa or Mastercard credit cards only. Check your office's payment instructions before collection, including the payee and amount for a money order or cashier's check. Do not count on paying cash.
If you live far away, compare the cost of two trips with a representative's delivery and pickup charges. Ask an agency to itemize its service charge separately from the consular fee.
Step 6: Pick up and check your visa
The pickup slip gives the earliest estimated collection date. Before making the trip, confirm both that the date has arrived or passed and that the portal says “Passport to be collected.” The date alone does not mean your passport is ready.
Bring the original slip and an accepted payment method. A representative can usually collect for you; check local requirements before giving them the slip. Consular offices do not offer routine postal submission or return service. Shipping offered by an agency is that agency's service.
Before leaving the counter, check your name, passport number, visa category, number of entries, “Enter Before” date and duration of each stay. US tourists can apply for a ten-year multiple-entry visa, but the officer decides the validity and stay allowance. A ten-year visa does not allow a ten-year stay; use the limits printed on the visa you receive.
When to start
Aim to start preparing four to six weeks before your trip, with more time for document problems or special circumstances. This is a planning buffer, not an official turnaround time. Submit within the portal's 90-day arrival window and follow your office's timing advice.
Stage | What to do | Before moving on |
|---|---|---|
Preparation | Check your district, passport, photo, extra documents and travel to the office. | Have a complete file and an arrival date within 90 days. |
Online application | Fill out the form, check every field and upload the documents. | Submit for preliminary review. |
Online review | Check your account and respond to review messages. | Wait for “Passport to be submitted.” |
Passport drop-off | Deliver the passport, barcode/status printout and requested originals. | Keep the pickup slip while processing continues. |
Collection | Bring the original slip, pay and check the visa. | Confirm the collection status and that the earliest pickup date has arrived. |
Before departure | Keep your passport accessible and check the visa's dates and stay allowance. | Plan around the visa issued, rather than the one requested. |
Online review times vary. Leave room for corrections, nationality assessments, name-change evidence or other additional review.
Before you travel to the visa office
Match your district. The selected office, application address and proof of residence should agree.
Check your files. Use the correct photo format and legible document scans.
Include your visa history. Gather previous visas and passports, or follow the office's declaration procedure if something is missing.
Confirm the status. For drop-off, wait for “Passport to be submitted.” For pickup, check both the status and the slip's date.
Check payment. Washington and Los Angeles accept different methods.
Plan for time without your passport. Avoid a conflict with another international trip while the visa office holds it.
What to recheck for a 2027 trip
The USD 140 reduced fee runs through December 31, 2026. A 2027 rate or extension has not been confirmed in the official sources for this guide. Check the new fee notice and your office's operating instructions before arranging travel to the counter.
US guidance allows representative submission and does not require attendance for fingerprint collection. That guidance does not give a December 31, 2026 expiry for the fingerprint arrangement. Do not apply a deadline from another country's visa center to a US application. The January 2024 simplification of routine tourist booking documents also remains in place, though officers can request more information.
A late-2026 application may fit an early-2027 trip if your intended arrival is within 90 days. Starting the form in 2026 does not lock in a fee or guarantee a ten-year visa. Once you receive the visa, check its entry dates and stay allowance against your plans.
Children and other special circumstances
Children: gather the birth certificate and any required parental consent, passport and nationality documents. A US-born child with a Chinese parent may need a nationality assessment. Holding a US passport alone does not determine whether the child needs a Chinese visa or a Travel Document. Read the embassy's guidance for US-born children of Chinese descent alongside your consulate's online checklist. Use the new portal requirements where the older page describes application forms.
Former Chinese citizens: a first application after naturalization requires extra documents. Check how to handle a missing Chinese passport or name differences before submitting.
Other passport holders living in the United States: you may need proof of lawful US stay or residence. Fees and visa-free eligibility can differ from those for US citizens.
Hong Kong, Macau or Taiwan: if your documents raise a residence or nationality question, use the relevant official instructions. Birthplace alone is not a reason to add unofficial requirements.
